The gender pay gap is a key measure of women’s economic empowerment and their equal representation in senior business roles and well-paid occupations. The Gender Pay Gap Information Act 2021 obliges employers to publish gender pay gap information. 

Reporting began in 2022 for employers with over 250 employees and extended to those with over 150 employees in 2024. This year, reporting obligations have been extended to employers with over 50 employees. 

The development of a centralised reporting database is currently at an advanced stage. The portal will be opening in September of this year for employers to register their account in advance of reporting in November.  The centralised portal will make information on employers’ gender pay gaps more accessible to the public and provide for a greater utilisation of the information as to how to eliminate the gender pay gap.

The publication of this information is likely to incentivise employers to take action to reduce the gender pay gap insofar as that is within their control and to also support Government policy in taking meaningful steps to further women’s economic empowerment.

The added value of EPIC membership for Ireland includes international collaboration and exchange of best practices. Membership will help Ireland benchmark its progress against other countries with similar economies or labour market strategies. Ireland’s existing policy positions strongly align with many of EPIC’s core policy priorities, including closing the gender pay gap and promoting pay transparency. Membership of the coalition will also strengthen Ireland’s commitment to equal pay and reinforce Ireland’s position as a proactive contributor to global gender equality efforts.
